Atletico Madrid to take Almunia when Schwarzer arrives

According to a report this morning, the 33 year-old Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia is set to move back to Spain with Atletico Madrid after the transfer of Mark Schwarzer is finalised this week.

There has been contradictory reports about the Fulham goalkeeper this week, with some papers saying that Fulham have rejected Arsenal’s offers, and others saying that the Australian has passed a second medical and will be announced as a Gunner this week.

But the People are certain that the deal will be confirmed this week, and that Almunia is not happy that he is due to be relegated to the bench so will jump at the chance to join Atletico Madrid in a cut-price deal.

I am sure that Wenger would be pleased to get some of the money laid out for Schwarzer back so quickly, so I could see this being true.

They go on to say that their financial troubles mean that Atletico will cash in on their Spanish U21 keeper David De Gea and replace him with Almunia on the cheap.

Another interesting statement in the article is that Wenger may also offload Lukasz Fabianski before the transfer window closes….
