Gunners coy over Mertesacker

Gunners coy over Mertesacke

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed that he is not close to signing any new players but has refused to confirm or deny interest in centre-back Per Mertesacker.

The giant Germany international has been repeatedly linked with the Gunners this summer as they search for additional replacements for Sol Campbell, William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre.

Wenger has already signed Laurent Koscielny this summer and he is thought to be interested in Udinese's Cristian Zapata as it is expected that he will sign another defender before the end of August.

But after Sunday's victory over Celtic, which clinched the Emirates Cup, the Frenchman insisted that he was "not close to signing anybody".

Asked if Werder Bremen's Mertesacker would fit the bill, he said: "I wouldn't like to comment on names because it raises the price straightaway 50 per cent."
