Wenger and Vermaelen feeling confident of success

The manager has been pleased with his team's start to pre-season, but knows they will have a tough job carrying that form into the beginning of the campaign.

Wenger's side could face a tricky start with an opening day visit to Anfield, but the Frenchman wants his players to start strongly to gain confidence to go all the way.

Wenger told the official Arsenal magazine: "The aim is to continue to progress as we have been doing.

"We were very close last year – closer than the previous season – so we are heading in the right way. We hope we can continue that this season.

"It is important to start well, start strongly and get into a good position early on and to try to maintain the level."

Defender Vermaelen also believes Arsenal can improve on last season, citing the team's mental strength and desire to win.

Speaking to Arsenal TV Online, he said: "We have a good young group who are very aggressive and want to improve.

"I hope we can compete for the title this year and I am convinced we will. People will always say we can't compete – it is not the first time, but we have to do what we always do which is work hard and play our own game, then we can compete."
